How do you manage a clock nobody measures?
Every department touches the car. Nobody owns the clock, and nobody measures it. A unit lands fresh. From stock-in to published: photo capture, service, prep clean, marketable photos. Recon and safety, some now, some later. Then it sells, and it's back to prep for a final clean and maybe a new safety. Every rooftop runs that process a little differently.
So when a car isn't front-line ready, the questions start. A recall? A parts delay? Someone off sick, and the file sat in limbo for a few extra days? The GM hears a different story from every department, and it's no one's fault. The assignments are ambiguous, so everyone is responsible for the clock and no one really is.
Every general manager, general sales manager, used-car manager and dealer principal agrees on one thing: get the car front-line ready, fast. Imagine one clock every department shares. The car sells, and everyone sees it. The repair order opens. Parts are late, and the note says which parts and why. Buyer's Bias
What if every unit your store has sold had an investment score to support your purchasing decisions on like units? Would you want to see it?
No two markets are alike. No two dealerships are alike. No two used cars are alike. Yet put ten used-car managers from the same street in one room, ask each for their top 20 vehicles ranked from best to worst, and you'll get ten different lists. Many of the same cars, never the same order. We call it Buyer's Bias. We buy what we have experience with, what feels safe and predictable. And we all know not every used vehicle is safe or predictable.
The data every store needs is already sitting in its DMS. We just aren't studying our own history. You could export it into a public AI tool, but then you've lost control of your store's private data. Not acceptable.
So ask yourself. What's your 30-day turn? What has each unit contributed, by your own store's history? When a manufacturer puts cash incentives and low rates on the new version of your late-model unit overnight, did your used car just lose value? When a serious recall hits the press, the damage is already done. How do you stay ahead of it for every make and model on your lot?
